Audience Research Survey Analysis

I made a survey to see what sort of audience would be interested in short films, particularly the one I would like to make.

From this question, there was more females than males who took my survey, which could mean that if they watch my short film which will involve a male character, they would be able to empathise with him more because stereotypically females are more compassionate than males. However, males are able to like the film also.

These results show that predominantly an older audience took my survey, showing that they are the main people who would watch short films, and be interested in mine. There is also more young adults that took the survey, meaning the film I make will appeal to this age category as well, which I planned for in the first place.

Q: What is a short film, how is it different to a full length film?

Answers:
  • Shorter...
  • The diverse subjects they portray.
  • Puts a point across quickly.
  • Focused to raise awareness.
  • Not long enough to be classed as a feature film.
  • Shorter piece of work which uses images to portray a quicker meaning.
  • It might be more visual and highlight an important issue, leave you something to think about.
  • Low budgets.
  • Tells story but lacks detail and character background.
  • Usually has a message.
From these answers I can see that short films mainly portray a message and raise awareness, therefore I know that for my film it would attract the audience to tell a story that has a message, which I would like to do with mental illness, specifically Schizophrenia.

The main answer from this question was 'to portray a message'. This means that my short film should be able to portray a message to the audience so that it appeals to them. The other popular answers were to tell a story and raise awareness of an issue, so I hope to achieve these areas by telling a story of a man with schizophrenia, and raising awareness of this mental health issue.

Q: How long do you expect a short film to be?

Answers:
  • 5 mins
  • 10-40 mins
  • 10 mins max
  • 30-1hr
  • Under an hour
  • Anything between 30 secs to 5 mins, especially in advertising.
From these answers it's clear that people know that it is shorter than a feature film, so they will see that mine would be a short film as it is up to 5 minutes long.

The majority of people who responded to my survey said they have watched a few short films before, which means that if they saw my short film they will know what sort of thing to expect.

Q: What interests you about short films?

Answers:
  • When a message gets across with an unexpected ending.
  • Normally get to the point quicker.
  • The secret meaning beforehand.
  • The message it sends out.
  • A bit abstract and thought provoking
  • You don't have to commit as much time to a full film, but still get the same message.
  • Enough viewing without becoming boring.
  • Leaves you wanting more.
  • Opportunity to deliver message before the audience can get bored.
  • Because they are shorter, they have a different character. Perhaps tighter/punchier and there is less time to set the scene and build characters.
  • Can bring joy or awareness.
  • Impact of the message.
  • To the point and sometimes factual.
From these answers I know some aspects I should focus on in my short film, so that it attracts this audience. A strong point through these answers is the message, therefore I need to make the message clear in my film so that it appeals to this audience.

I asked this question to see what genres they expect a short film to be, whether they are the same as the normal genre categories or different. The audience said that they think short films fit into normal genre categories, which means that the genre for my film will have some element of a normal genre.

I asked this question to see whether the audience would be interested in watching a film about schizophrenia, so that I would know that it would appeal to the audience, rather than not appealing to anyone. 90% of the audience said they would be interested, which is good because I know that people will want to watch it, and therefore I will have that audience.

From asking this question, I found out that most of the audience favourite the drama genre, which is good because I would like to create this film about Schizophrenia in an artistic way to make it look like a drama film, so this means that it can appeal to the audience. One person said that they like documentary style short films, and I would like to include this element in my short film by telling the story of a man with Schizophrenia.
